Victorian / Edwardian ebony stamp box

  • $45000 CAD

A fine ebony carved late Victorian or Edwardian stamp box and pen rest, this black wooden stamp holder has been decorated with scrolls and flowers. The flat lid lifts up to reveal 4 stamp slots. The little tray to the front is perfect for holding pens or seals. Alternatively, this would be a sweet little artist desk item, with little blocks of watercolor in the slots and the brush resting in front. In great condition without cracks, breaks of losses. A few small marks of age and use, most notably on the inside of the hinged lid. Not marked for ebony, but with the same look, feel and weight as other boxes I have listed.
"Although used by 18th and 19th century English cabinet makers and box makers, Ebony tended to be more favoured by their continental counterparts. Because of costs and overlogging, they stopped the commercial use of ebony at the start of the 20th century. Ebony is still an exceedingly rare and valuable tree species that continues to face extinction."
Condition: great!
