Originally a dressing table box, this vintage ebony box would serve well as a little gift box, a jewelry storage or trinket box, or to use as a little piece of decorative storage for the office. or why not use it to store items such a food supplement or vitamin pills? The turned wood is beautifully smooth with small signs of age and use. It is signed underneath 'Ebony'. Items such as this were very popular in the Edwardian era (1901-1910) and whole sets can be collected for the dressing table, or as desk accessories.
Although used by 18th and 19th century English cabinet makers and box makers, Ebony tended to be more favoured by their continental counterparts. Because of costs and overlogging, they stopped the commercial use of ebony at the start of the 20th century. Ebony is still an exceedingly rare and valuable tree species that continues to face extinction.
